IMPORTANT: Somerset County Council is holding a consultation exercise on the future of the Library Service in Somerset. The Friends of Nether Stowey Library are working closely with the Library Service to acheive the best possible outcome for our Nether Stowey Library.

You can read the draft proposals for libraries in the Bridgwater and Burnham area (which includes Nether Stowey Library) by Clicking HERE In essence this is to Provide library services through either: a partnership with the local community to maintain a library building in Nether Stowey (supported by some funding from the County Council), or an additional mobile library stop. This would mean the closure of the current library building, with library services being provided in other ways.

You can have your own say HERE (the same questionnaire can be completed after reading the background available through the first link in this section). The consultation exercise ends on 22 April 2018. Please respond and encourage your friends and contacts to do the same, to protect our valuable library service and our historic library building (the original gift to the village by Thomas Poole).

Aims of the Friends of Nether Stowey Library

Welcome to our website. In developing and extending the community outreach of the library we aim to:

Our activities (in the library unless stated otherwise!)

We have held a number of Second Hand Book Sales with books donated by members and In essence local residents. These were so successful, we were becoming short of storage space between sales and this popular event has been suspended for now. A number of the donated books have been put into library stocks. Thanks to all concerned!

Rhyme & Story Time for babies, young children and their mums, dads and gandparents is held each Monday at 11 am

Also for children a Lego Club is being held monthly on Saturday mornings 10:00 am to 12 noon (more information is in the library). Donors of Lego are always welcome!

A Mah Jong group meet each Wednesday at 2:30 pm. All welcome; just come along.

A Jigsaw Club now meets and there's a jigsaw out on a library table all the time!

Nether Stowey Library

We enjoy a very spacious library!

We hold an annual 100-Word Short Story Competition which does exactly as it says 'on the tin'. Juniors and seniors may enter and prizes are awarded to those selected by our invited judge. The winners read their works at a Friends meeting.

In the Quantocks we are blessed with many local writers and presenters. You can talk to them at our Meet the Author events. Related to this are our Tall Story occasions when any local writers, amateur or otherwise, attend to read some of their compositions.

Library activity

Plenty of space for evening talks and gatherings

Our popular Knit and Natter sessions are held every Wednesday morning in the library from 10:30am until 12 noon.  You can bring your knitting, sewing, tapestry or current craftwork along and get to know other people from Nether Stowey and the surrounding villages. Attendance free, but we ask for a small donation towards the teas and coffees served.

We also run Ancestry Family History sessions with trained volunteers available as needed to help you research your family history. Online access to Ancestry.com is free in the library. Please contact Nether Stowey library for more information.

World Book Night

Our webmaster giving out books for World Book Night!

With the local school we have a Story Time session so that when local school children come to choose books they can sit and hear a story read to them selected by our librarian.

Last but not least, we run regular Evening Talks and Presentations. These are advertised on our website and in the village magazine: The Quantock Messenger.

We are always open to suggestions. Watch this space and use our contact form if you would like to get in touch with us.

Health awareness event in the library!
